Reservations Manager, Yvonne Gordon, explains why there is more to the Canal du Midi than tree-lined towpaths and sleepy medieval villages.
If you are considering cruising the inland waterways of France, you are probably familiar with popular tourist haunts such as Carcassonne and Narbonne. A regular visitor to the Midi, Yvonne recommends visiting a few lesser known gems.
“Along with the beautiful scenery and fabulous weather, one of the main attractions of the Midi is the individual character of each lock. With almost 60 locks between Port Lauragais and Capestang, there are ample opportunities to sample the produce on offer and admire the handiwork of the locals:
- There is a pleasant mooring in the small village of Villesequelande where you can stock up on freshly baked bread and fish for your supper. Villesquelande boasts one of the oldest trees still growing in France.
- There are lovely artworks for sale at Peyruque, and I strongly recommend that visitors try the delicious home-made Lemon Tart!
- The double lock at Aiguille is decorated with fantastic sculptures, all hand-made by the lock keeper – make sure that you have your camera ready!
- Chateau Paraza and its surrounding vineyards make a picturesque mooring for a spot of lunch and perhaps a glass or two.
- The charming hamlet of Le Somail offers plenty of choice for canal side dining with a selection of welcoming cafes and restaurants
- Allow a little time to visit Capestang at the end or beginning of your trip. There is a bustling market in the picturesque town square on Wednesday and Sunday mornings. Keep an eye out for the marvellous wall art!”

Freewheel Afloat have teamed up with the splendid Château les Carrasses to offer an exclusive range of holidays.
After cruising the world famous Canal du Midi, guests can now round off their holiday with a stay at this magnificent Chateau situated just 2 miles from our boat base at Capestang. The Château les Carrasses is a 19th century wine domaine, now sympathetically renovated to create an outstanding estate with accommodation and an impressive range of facilities. The Chateau was featured in Harpers Bazaar “Travel Top 100″ destinations.
Around two main courtyards, linked by a central avenue, are the buildings traditionally found on an important wine domain: the château, the winery and cellars, the blacksmith’s house, stables, forge and granary and the estate cottages, all of which have been transformed into a truly special holiday estate. Beyond these exceptional suites, apartments, houses and villas, you’ll find a great range of facilities. There is an infinity pool, tennis court, conservatory, orchard, and olive grove.
In the brasserie stylish Mediterranean cuisine is served using fresh local ingredients. Meals are served in the beautifully restored salon with its cast iron pillars and vaulted ceilings or on the superb terrace with spectacular views over the estate and surrounding countryside.
Accommodation is in suites, apartments or villas in the grounds, with options for 2-8 people. Properties are individually designed with fully-equipped kitchen and air conditioning. Most properties have sunny private gardens or terraces with outdoor dining areas and sun loungers. Many also have private heated pools. Beyond the properties lie 10 acres of gardens, vineyards and woodlands. Bicycles are available to guests for use free of charge.
Freewheel Afloat are offering dining packages as well as accommodation. Prices start from €19 for a 2 course lunch with free transfers from the boat base at Capestang. Double Suites start from £126 per night.

Not only did Freewheel Afloat feature in the Sunday Times Best 100 Holidays, we made it to the top 20!!
Not wanting to blow our own trumpet, here’s an excerpt from the article that appeared this weekend:
“It’s amazing what you can do on a boat. I’m still getting over the fact that you can pootle around the Venice lagoon in a cabin cruiser with no training at all. Now, Freewheel Afloat is also offering similar trips on the waterways of Germany, right through the heart of Berlin. The countryside is suprisingly peaceful and pretty, and there’s no better way to see the most exciting city in Europe. Glide past the Reichstag, moor up a stone’s throw from the Brandenburg Gate and staggerback to be rocked to sleep after a night on the tiles”
For details of special offers on our boats in Venice and Berlin, visit our website or give us a call on +44 (0)116 255 8417.
Keep an eye out for us in the Sunday Times Travel Section this weekend - we are proud to announce that we have made it into their Best 100 Holidays List.
Much jubilation here at Freewheel HQ !
